New Zealand Hops Ltd is a grower-owned cooperative based in Nelson, New Zealand. Hops have been grown in the region for more than 150 years and co-ordination of the industry was facilitated with the inception of the New Zealand Hop Marketing Board in 1939. The company has supported a professional plant-breeding programme since the 1950s and, in 1986, became the first country in the world to commercially produce hops from triploid hop cultivars in response to international brewers' demand for seedless hops.

The unique opportunity arose to Package their type 90 pelleted hops product for domestic and export markets. Pelleted hops are much easier to handle, store and transport compared with raw hops as they have a higher bulk density, and also has the advantage of increased homogeneity due the blend matrix before pressing the hops. The dried hops are pelleted at their own facility near Nelson.

Due to the large volume per pack required (5kg) a large vertical form fill seal machine was supplied. The packing line begins with a 400kg bulk bag of product, which is then fed to a 14 head scale by an indexing conveyor. The multihead scale is an accurate, high speed option for many food types including; sticky foods, free flowing granules and powders, and also fragile and complex products, as the computer can determine which combination of heads will contain the targeted volume of product.

Reactive Engineering Ltd have the ability to design and develop all your packaging wants and needs with in-house 3D CAD software and engineering solutions, as well as being able to build, install and commission the machinery and train employees to a comfortable level.

Flow at Leaders

Leader Products based in Auckland, New Zealand, manufacture quality, frozen, convenience foods. Their vast range of products include; burgers, schnitzels, hot dogs, nuggets and many more. Leader Products have been experiencing continuous, strong growth in the Individual Quick Frozen (IQF) industry. Outgrowing their existing machines capacity, Reactive Engineering proposed a new setup of the packing line. Implementing a Multiweigh, 14 head weigher and replacing the bagger with a GKS FLOW, high speed, state of the art bagging machine. The first Weigher and bagger combination were installed in October 2012, with a second line in 2014. With the introduction of FLOW, Leaders are now able to pack at speeds of 50-60 bags per minute in LDPE-films. In comparison with the old line, this is 3-4 times the capacity. The key factor in choosing FLOW, besides the capacity and robust stainless steel design, is the wash down capability of the machine. The food production industry’s greatest concern is cleanliness. FLOW boasts an IP67 rating throughout the machine, therefore making it the ONLY packaging machine on the market offering this potential.
